Proactive or Rogue?

The story: The team agreed to take more initiative. He took it seriously — he launched the new website alone, no approvals, no loop-in. He thought he was being proactive. She thought he'd gone rogue. "Next time, loop us in before going all out." He'd done exactly what was asked of him, by his own definition.

What it means for organisations: Initiative without boundaries is just unilateral action with good intentions. When a team agrees to be more proactive, the unspoken question is: proactive within what limits? Who decides what qualifies? Until that's defined, one person's initiative is another person's breach of process.
